Scope

This workshop is intended to be a fruitful forum for informal discussion of new results and future projects of synchrotron-radiation-based research on magnetism and also serve for the formation of new collaborations. Recent achievements and discoveries based on application of large variety of X-ray spectroscopic techniques to materials with intriguing magnetic properties will be highlighted. X-Ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) and X-Ray Magnetic Linear Dichroism (XMLD) have allowed insights into the microscopic origin of fundamental effects such exchange interactions and magnetic anisotropy and have become a powerful probe of charge, orbital and spin degrees of freedom. The ESRF beamlines ID12, ID32, ID24 and ID26 offer unique possibilities in the field of magnetic spectroscopy using XMCD/XMLD under multiple extreme conditions of high field, low temperatures and high pressure as well as magnetic dichroism in Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering. In addition, Mossbauer spectroscopy could be exploited at beamline ID18 to probe specific atomic sites yielding microscopic information on the magnetic properties of “XMCD-silent” materials. The emerging new opportunities for magnetism research offered by the ESRF-EBS project will be thoroughly discussed.

Motivation

The 'X-ray Spectroscopy of Magnetic Solids (XRMS)' meetings started in 2000 have proved as a fruitful forum for informal discussion of recent results and future projects of synchrotron radiation based research on magnetism and also served for the formation of new collaborations. It developed into a regular series which is as follows: 2000 BESSY, 2001 Halle, 2002 Dresden, 2003 BESSY, 2005 SLS, 2007 ESRF, 2008 DESY, 2009 Diamond, 2011 SLAC. We would like to revivify this series with the proposed workshop which will bring together the best specialists in the field and will allow for a comprehensive view of the latest achievements and of the envisioned developments in the field. During the meeting we will seek to highlight the current state-of-the-art and capabilities for X-ray magnetic spectroscopy at the extremely high brilliance light.

Topics

  • Spin-Orbit Entanglement in strongly correlated systems
  • Magnetism under multiple extreme conditions (H,P,T,…)
  • Molecular Magnetism
  • Magnetic Interfaces and Surfaces
  • New approaches for studies of magnetic systems with X-rays

Registration

There is no registration fee!  Lunches, dinner on Monday 7 October, Wine & Cheese buffet on Tuesday 8 October and accommodation during the workshop will be provided free of charge.

However, all the participants have to arrange and pay for their own travel to/from Grenoble.
