Jean Susini has worked at the European Synchrotron, the ESRF since 1989. He joined the Optics Group at the ESRF after a Ph.D in Chemical Physics at the University Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris and his thesis, at LURE in Orsay. His initial work focused especially on X-ray mirrors and optical metrology development.

In 1994, Jean was appointed as a permanent beamline scientist for a new X-ray microscope project at ESRF’s ID21 beamline, focussing on spectro-microscopy at the sulfur K-edge. Later, striving to provide ESRF users with a complete suite of complementary instruments, he coordinated the development of a cluster of beamlines and endstations (ID18F, ID21, ID22, ID22NI and ID21-FTIR) which has attracted an increasing number of new communities.

In 2009, Jean was appointed Head of the newly created Instrumentation Services and Development Division at the ESRF, a position he will hold until moving into his new post.

During his career Jean has appeared on more than 120 publications in international peer reviewed journals and has given more than 70 invited lectures. Jean also remains active in the photon science community, serving on various advisory boards and review committees at an international level. These appointments have included ALBA (Spain), Diamond (UK), IPANEMA – SOLEIL (France), NSRRC (Taiwan) APS, ALS and NSLS-II (USA). In 2009-2013 he was chairman of the Instrumentation Working Group of Eiroforum and he occasionally lectures at the University Joseph Fourier (Grenoble) and at the University Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris).

Along with the appointment of Jean Susini into his role, ESRF Council delegates and observers also welcomed the new Delegation from Russia who were taking part in their first Council Meeting as a contracting party since Russia become a full member state in June this year.
