ID30A-1 (MASSIF-1) In May last year, the EMBL CrystalDirect robot was permanently installed on MASSIF-1 allowing the fully automatic harvesting of protein crystals from crystallisation trays. The device has now been fully incorporated into the ESRF beamline environment for automatic room temperature and dehydration experiments at scale. The installation combines expertise from the EMBL HTX lab with automated data collection on MASSIF-1, creating the world s first end-to-end protein- to-structure beamline. Contact beamline scientists Matthew Bowler (mbowler@embl.fr) or Didier Nurizzo (nurizzo@esrf.fr) for access.

ID24/HPLF The new High Power Laser Facility (HPLF), coupling a 50 J laser to the time-resolved XAS beamline ID24, welcomed its first users in December 2021. It allows the investigation of matter under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature up to the warm dense matter regime. Laser-induced compressed states can be probed by single bunch X-ray absorption, revealing both ionic and electronic structures. Applications range from planetary science to energy and material science. In the next run, the HPLF will be upgraded to 100 J for investigations up to the TPa range.
BM07 (FIP2) The successor to the French CRG MX beamline BM30A-FIP officially opened on 1 October last year. Based at the BM07 port, FIP2 has a tunable X-ray beam that is approximately 10 times more intense than its predecessor. The beamline is now equipped with a hybrid pixel detector, and datasets of excellent quality can be collected in a couple of minutes from crystals of size 100 × 100 × 100 µm3. Samples stored in liquid nitrogen, or crystallisation plates at room temperature, can be presented to the X-ray beam using a robotic arm.
Data Portal Users can now view their HDF5 files content in the data portal thanks to the newly plugged web app h5web . Meanwhile, all participants of an experiment can create DOIs for specific datasets (tinyurl.com/ESRFDOIs). If you need help, or have questions or feedback, please e-mail dataportal-feedback@esrf.fr.
CM01 The ESRF s cryo-electron microscopy facility is now equipped with a K3 camera, increasing the throughput to 350 450 movies/hour and allowing users to collect sufficient data in less time. Additionally, the latest version of EPU allows drug- screening cryo-EM experiments exploiting the multi-grid option. We remind users to make use of the Solution-tO-Structure (SOS) pipeline that allows them to start from a liquid sample (or vitrified grids) all the way up to Krios access for high-end cryo-EM data collection. For more details go to www.esrf.fr/cryoEM-SOS.
BM18 BM18 (right) is progressively starting operations and has been accepting proposals for the 1 March deadline. Nevertheless, only the small tomograph (max 30 kg, 30 cm) will be available during this first run of operations. Proposals requiring the large tomograph should be submitted only for the 12 September deadline.
ID29 Friendly users for pilot experiments at the new ID29, which is dedicated to time- resolved serial crystallography, are expected to be welcomed in June this year. Proposals can be submitted as BAG or rolling access specifically for ID29 at the next call on 12 September.
