SCOPE

The development of new materials for energy relies to a large extent on a profound understanding of the multi-scale origins of their properties. Intense synchrotron X-ray and neutron beams, with their capacity to probe matter from the atomic to the macro scale, contribute significantly to this objective and are expected to play an even more important role in the future.

This HERCULES school is addressed to all young scientists (PhD students, Post-Docs, ...) wishing to know and use the capabilities of neutrons and synchrotron radiation to contribute to the knowledge in the field of production, storage and economy of clean, renewable energy, a major challenge of the present century.

HERCULES Specialised Courses (HSC) are co-organized by the Grenoble scientific and technical Universities (UJF and Grenoble-INP), in close collaboration with the ESRF, the ILL and GIANT. This HSC is of particular importance because the energy topic was identified as a priority area for these Universities, Large Facilities and for the Grenoble public-private GIANT partnership.

This one week school will present, during the two first days, the X-ray and neutron based techniques useful for the analysis of the properties of materials for energy conversion, harvesting, storage and economy. The two following days will be devoted to “hands on” experiments on X-ray and neutron devices used for research, under the supervision of the scientists working on these instruments. The last day will cover recent applications showing the contribution of neutrons and synchrotron radiation to this topic.

This school intends to promote the sharing of information on the latest developments on this crucial area of science and technology (poster session, ad’hoc discussions). The event shall favour the cooperation and networking between the users of large scale facilities with academic and industrial actors of the energy materials field
