Visit the ESRF

The ESRF welcomes group visits, especially within our educational programmes or in collaboration with universities and institutes from our partner countries.

The number of visitors is limited due to safety reasons.

Visits usually take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, between 9-12:30 and between 13:30-17:00. No visits are possible on French bank holidays.

We propose visits in French or in English.

Three types of visit are possible:

  • Standard visits

We can welcome groups of 15 to 45 persons for standard visits. These visits last for about 2.5 hours, including a one-hour general presentation followed by a 1.5 hour visit of the facility in smaller groups.

Standard visits are reserved for high-school and university students.

  • Short visits

Short visits are designed for groups of 10-15 persons, with a duration of 1.5 hours.

  • Synchrotron@School programme

Our educational programme, "Synchotron@School", is based on a collaboration with the "Académie de Grenoble". Geared for high-school students, the one-day programme includes experimental workshops and ESRF site visits. These days of hands-on science and discovery help students to better understand the construction of a research project and to discover the diversity of science careers in an international facility.

For safety reasons:

  • Visitors must be at least 15 years old
  • Visitors must present a valid ID (national identity card, passport, French driving licence) before entering the ESRF. Photocopies or digital versions of ID are not accepted
  • Pregnant women are not allowed to visit the ESRF
  • People wearing an electronic device sensitive to magnetic fields (pacemaker) are not allowed to visit the ESRF

Requests to visit the ESRF must be received by the ESRF at least two months prior to the date of the visit.
