The beginning of 2023 was marked by the successful return of the ESRF User Meeting
on site for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic (News, p6). More than 400
scientists from our 21 partner countries and beyond participated, with particular
interest shown by young researchers. Almost one in four participants was a PhD
student or a postdoctoral researcher, some coming to a synchrotron and the ESRF for
the first time.
An occasion for networking and collaboration between the ESRF and the scientific
user community, the 2023 edition of the User Meeting was a great opportunity to
provide updates on the new Extremely Brilliant Source (EBS) facilities and on the
new science carried out at the ESRF thanks to the capabilities of the EBS. After more
than two years of successful operation, the EBS is already a science powerhouse with
impressive results in vital fields, including sub-cellular imaging of human organs, time-
resolved serial crystallography, new materials for energy and industry, and the studies
of key molecular components of our universe, such as the discovery of new phases of
water that may exist in giant planets.
As an illustration, the ESRF hosts nine on-going
European Research Council (ERC) grants exploiting
the EBS, including one awarded to materials scientist
Tilman Grünewald, who also received the 2023
ESRF Young Scientist Award from the ESRF User
Organisation for his “outstanding contribution and
scientific leadership in the development of X-ray
diffraction techniques and their application to the
understanding of biomaterials” (p7).
Along with the examples above, this issue of the
ESRF News will give you some of the first results of
EBS science. I hope it will inspire all our users for future
experiments at the ESRF.
