The Oxford suspension bridge, that is a well-known sight for regular ESRF users, will undergo major works starting from Monday 10 March 2025, with closures that will affect user travel to and from the ESRF.
These works will impact the traffic of all vehicles (cars, buses, bicycles, etc.) as well as pedestrians, according to the provisional schedule below:
- From 10 March to 16 May 2025: no traffic (no vehicles, bicycles or pedestrians) from 8:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on weekdays;
- From 19 May to 19 September 2025: all traffic prohibited 24h/24 et 7d/7 (except for bicycles and pedestrians at weekends only);
- From 22 September to 31 October 2025: no traffic (no vehicles, bicycles or pedestrians) from 8:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on weekdays.
Public transport:
Disruption of public transport is foreseen, in particular for lines crossing the bridge between 8.30 p.m and 6.00 a.m, until 16 May 2025, and for all lines crossing the bridge from 19 May to 19 September inclusive.
For airport shuttles, our latest information is that the shuttles will still stop at the Grenoble-Oxford stop. However we recommend that you check and confirm this with the driver when boarding your bus at Lyon airport. If not, you can get off at the Grenoble bus station and take the tram B towards "Presqu'île Scientifique", getting off at the terminus just outside the ESRF.
Transport by car:
For vehicles coming from Lyon, alternative routes are suggested (see map below): either via the A48 motorway to Porte de France (purple line), or via the A480 motorway to Pont du Vercors (orange line).
Journey times:
Be aware that the shuttle journey times, in particular from Lyon airport to Grenoble, may take longer during peak-hour traffic as the shuttle will have to follow a detour that avoids the Oxford Bridge.
Shuttles and vehicles going towards Lyon will be able to use the new A480 motorway access (pink line in map) and so no delays are expected.
This page will be updated with further information on the second phase of works at a later date.
