New insertion devices (IDs) are continuously in procurement, assembly, installation and commissioning, together with the beamlines. In 2021, the first phase shifter and the first ambient field compensation loop were both installed in ID32. A mini wiggler was installed on ID15A and the second CPMU was installed during the summer restart, along with the first 2.3 m revolver in-air device on ID16B.
The stability of the electron beam and X-rays remain a key issue and needs to be studied continuously. Two new X-ray beam position monitors (X-BPMs) were installed in the beamlines of BM08 and BM16 in 2021. The preliminary results obtained from the data taken from the X-BPMs provide much information and could be used for studies on stability.
The ASD was heavily involved in the Russian USSR4 international collaboration project in 2021. The accelerator physics design, including linear optics design, dynamic aperture simulations, magnetic error analyses and collective effects studies, was carried out together with the design study of the injector. Based on the accelerator physics design, the main sub-system specifications of hardware, such as the radio frequency system, were proposed and the preliminary technical design is still ongoing.
In conclusion, EBS operation reached its objectives with better statistics than 2020 thanks to the great efforts and dedication of ASD staff and the valuable support of the other ESRF divisions. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all ESRF staff for their continuous efforts in the operation of EBS and the accelerator development projects in 2021 Q. QIN
