On 30 January 2020 one month ahead of schedule 26 out of 27 insertion device beamlines opened their front-ends with 5 mA stored electron beam current. On all beamlines, the EBS X-ray beam was found within fractions of millimetres from its pre-shutdown position.

First beam for EBS EBS design parameters reached
February
On 28 February, the design value of 200 mA stored beam in the new EBS storage ring was reached for the first time. All beam parameters were already very close to those required to restart in User Service Mode (USM) on 25 August 2020, essentially six months ahead of schedule.
On 16 March, following the French government s measures to limit the spread of COVID-19, the ESRF site was closed until 11 May. A COVID-19 pandemic strategy plan was implemented, with the objective to keep the ESRF site a safe working place, and the ambition to maintain the date of 25 August for the restart of User Service Mode (USM) with a maximum number of operational beamlines. The plan was complemented by the ESRF s engagement to contribute to the worldwide scientific research effort to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic.
