Evacuation Information
General Information
- In an emergency, an alarm (siren) will sound and a message (English-French) will be given out over the loudspeaker system. Pay particular attention to the instructions given in the message.
- Keep calm and warn your colleagues nearby who may not have heard the alarm.
- Leave all work that is ongoing, but remember to switch off the power supply of dangerous equipment (tool machines, soldering iron, …).
- Remember that visitors, outside companies and temporary workers do not know the site well and need to be guided.
- If you have to cross a smoke-filled area, put a handkerchief or another piece of fabric (dampened, if possible) over your mouth and nose. Remember to walk as close as possible to the ground, where the concentration of toxic products is weaker.
- Go to an emergency exit - do not return to your work place if you are elsewhere.
- Then go to the gathering point which corresponds to your work area and await further instructions.
- Do not re-enter the buildings until you have received explicit instructions to do so by the Safety Group. You would put your life in serious danger if the incident has no visible signs eg. bomb alert, leak of toxic products, confined fire, ….
Specific Instructions
Central Building
- Before leaving your office, check that it is empty and in this case, put the green label on the outside handle so that the emergency services can see that the office has been evacuated. Do not lock the doors.
- Never use the lifts in an evacuation. Mobility-reduced personnel must be evacuated using the collapsible evacuation chairs placed in the two stairwells, between the 2nd & 3rd floors.
Experimental Hall
- Persons working on a beamline normally evacuate along the beamline freeway to the nearest emergency exit.
- Secondary escape routes, via the neighbouring beamlines, are defined in case the given beamline freeway would be blocked. These routes are identified with green markings on the floor.
- The zones adjacent to the Belledonne and Chartreuse Experimental Hall may be evacuated via the ground floor of the Chartreuse and Belledonne halls (and LOB). However, due to the complex configuration of the beamline and laboratories in the new halls, we recommend the evacuation of these zones via the escape lanes located on the 1st floor between the two buildings.
- Ground markings at the foot of the stairs indicate the path to follow. On the 1st floor the emergency exit doors are clearly signposted and painted green. Outside the building, a light-signalling device indicates the pathway to follow.
- It is difficult to hear the message in the laboratories or at the beamlines. As soon as the siren sounds, leave your work place in order to hear the instructions.
- In the case of evacuation, the beam will not necessarily be stopped but you must nevertheless leave your work place and go to the gathering points.
- Never leave dangerous equipment on during an evacuation (turn off the power supply, close the safety caps of gas cylinders). It may damage emergency service equipment or make the situation worse.
