New Science with New Detectors
Scope of the Workshop
The ESRF, with the help of the users community, is in the process of developing its Long Term Strategy (LTS), covering the next 10 to 20 years. A central role in this LTS will be given to detector developments, since it is clear that the biggest possible improvement in performance is by increasing the overall detection capabilities. These improvements can be both quantitative, meaning more and larger detectors, and qualitative, meaning new detection concepts. The ESRF has the intention to define one or more pilot projects, that will address ambitious scientific questions, and need a corresponding ambitious detector development. These pilot projects will then serve as the driving force for the development of new detectors. The purpose of this workshop entitled: ?New Science with New Detectors?, is to review, with the user community, the fields of science or the possible scientific projects that could drive such a development. The ultimate goal being to identify the best possible ?pilot project(s)?. Since we are trying to look ahead at the next 10 to 20 years, the workshop will have a large ?brain storming? character.
