The Diffractometer - Experimental Hutch
A precision Huber 3+2 circle diffractometer is the heart of the nano diffraction endstation it is optimized for coplanar diffraction geometry in the vertical scattering plane. The chi-circle is absent to gain stability to guarantee a low excentricity. The nano diffractometer and its optical granite bench serve experiments where small beams and high stability of sample and optics are required. It consists of a three-circle sample goniometer equipped with a hexapod for coarse positioning and angular alignment of the sample. The final positioning element is a piezo scanner from Physik Instrumente (P-stage) . It allows for a stroke of 100 microns in x-y and from 10 to 100 microns in z, depending on the model. It is used in continuous motion for scanning or in a step mode when necessary. It is at the heart of the Quick mapping tool (K-map) that has become one of the most used techniques on ID01. This sample goniometer is fixed to the optical bench hosting the nanofocusing optics minimizing the mutual movement of both. The two circle detector arm is mechanically decoupled from this sample mounting avoiding vibrations induced by detector arm motion.
Working in the reciprocal space (hkl mode) is also possible as well as scattering in the horizontal geometry.
