Aim & Scope

The workshop "Scientists & the Media", which will take place in the ESRF Visitor Center, is designed to be an introduction to working with the media (though people with all levels of media experience are welcome to attend if they wish).

Do you want to highlight your work in the media but you do not know where to start? Perhaps you would like to raise your profile but are concerned about the prospect of speaking to journalists? Maybe you haven't thought about your work in this way before and would like to know if it is newsworthy to the media? Or do you just wonder, why bother speaking to the media at all?

This session, run by a trained journalist and science communications specialist, will explain what journalists are looking for in a news item, help you pull out the most newsworthy aspects of your work and show you how to turn your scientific paper into a text that members of the media will take a second glance at. It will give examples of stories that have gained substantial media coverage and tell you about the experience of other scientists who have worked with the media.

It will also explain how your communications team can work with you to link you up with journalists and give your story the best chance of making it to press.

Organisation

Two sessions will be organised on Monday morning, 9 February:

  • One session from 10.00 to 11.30 and one session from 12.30 to 14.00,
  • The number of participants will be limited to 30 participants per session,
  • Persons interested must register via the electronic registration form.

A buffet lunch will be served between 11.30 and 12.30: both people attending the first session and the second session are welcome to join the lunch during which they will have the opportunity to ask informal questions.
