The discussion is open! How do you see the ESRF of the future?

04-12-2012

At more than half way through the first phase of the ESRF upgrade programme, the time is ripe to formulate a comprehensive scientific and technical case for the second phase, starting in 2015.

The ESRF Management has proposed a major upgrade of the existing storage ring to boost the brilliance by a factor of 30 or more. The white paper outlining this proposal was presented to the Council late November. The Council has mandated the ESRF Management to launch a technical design study and an in-depth analysis of the scientific case.

Now, with the Users' Meeting on 4-6 February 2013, the scientific and technical case of the second phase of the upgrade will be formulated with the user community. To openly discuss the details of the new scientific opportunities that arise from the foreseen upgrade, five workshops are scheduled in parallel to the Users' Meeting.

We look forward to welcoming a large number of participants to these workshops and to the lively discussions expected at these exciting events.

The workshops will be held on Monday, 4th February 2013. They are organized around the following topics:

  • X-ray cinematography with the new coherent source
  • Seeing is believing: the future of structural biology
  • Phase II prospects for materials and chemistry
  • From functional soft matter to biology: challenges for the future
  • Science at extreme conditions with an ultimate source
